Grow, Process, Market, Eat--Value-Added Grains!
Join us for a twilight field event at the Rutgers University Snyder Farm ( 140 Locust Grove Rd, Pittstown, NJ 08867) to discover whether a grain enterprise can work for your farm. The event, hosted by the Northeast Organic Growers Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) and (OGRIN), will include:
--A field tour of over 30 different varieties/landraces of spring- and fall-planted grains, including modern, heritage, and ancient wheats, ryes, malting and edible barleys, hulless oats, buckwheat, and flax. Experienced grain growers will join Drs. Elizabeth Dyck (OGRIN) and Joseph Heckman (Rutgers Soil Fertility Specialist) to discuss management strategies that produce high-quality products and profitable market opportunities.
--A demonstration of affordable, small-scale grain processing equipment (some of it farmer-made), including used and new grain cleaners, an oat roller, and dehullers for use with spelt, emmer, and einkorn.
--A tasting of many of the grains you’ve just seen in the field. The tasting will include cooked grains—wheat, barley, rye, einkorn, emmer, and spelt—and dishes and baked goods prepared by local chefs and bakers.
